Upon learning of this, Lord Shiva assumes the fierce form of Kaal Bhairav to humble Brahma and reveal Shiva’s ultimate supremacy. In a dramatic act, Lord Bhairav plucks one of Brahma’s five heads, demonstrating Shiva’s unparalleled power. In the end, Brahma, chastised and humbled, concedes Shiva’s superiority.
However, this act has unintended consequences. Lord Shiva, by harming Brahma, incurs a grave curse. The severed head of Brahma becomes stuck to Shiva’s hand, leading Shiva to wander as a mendicant Bhikshadana for 12 years, carrying Brahma’s head as an affliction. Only Lord Vishnu intervenes to relieve Shiva from this curse. Thus, the Kaal Bhairav form is often depicted holding Brahma’s severed head, signifying this legend.
Kaal Bhairav is recognized as a roaming God and the guardian of various directions, with a dog as his mount. There are multiple forms of Bhairav, and eight principal manifestations collectively known as Ashta Bhairavs. Among these, Lord Maha Swarna Kaal Bhairav, or simply Kaal Bhairav, is considered the supreme ruler of all Bhairavs. Kaal symbolizes time, making Kaal Bhairav the Lord of universal time and eternity. Furthermore, Kaal Bhairav is believed to be free from Maya, the illusion, and is associated with crematoriums. He is also regarded as the protective deity of Shakthi Peeths, reflecting the presence of Kaal Bhairav shrines at these important Shakthi worship sites.

The celebration of Bhairav Ashtami, also known as Kaal Bhairav Jayanthi, is a significant occasion in the temple. This festival falls on the eighth day of the waning fortnight in the month of Margashirsha (November-December). Another revered celebration is Shiv Rathri.
