Omkareshwar Temple is a testament to the profound spirituality and devotion of the people of India. Located in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, it finds its place among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, believed to be the divine manifestations of Lord Shiva. The temple’s setting on Mandhata Island in the Narmada River, shaped like the sacred symbol “ॐ” (Om), adds to its spiritual aura.
Jyotirlinga Shrines :
The significance of Omkareshwar Temple is deeply rooted in the concept of Jyotirlinga. According to Hindu mythology, Shiva, the supreme deity, appeared as a colossal pillar of light, the Jyotirlinga, to test the supremacy of creation. Vishnu and Brahma embarked on a quest to find the end of this divine light, leading to Shiva’s manifestation as the second Jyotirlinga. Legends and History :
- Vindhya’s Worship :
One legend recounts how Vindhya, the deity of the Vindhyachal mountain range, created a sacred geometrical diagram and a Lingam to worship Shiva. Pleased with this devotion, Shiva appeared as Omkareshwar and Amaleswara. The island was subsequently named Omkareswar.
- Mandhata’s Penance :
King Mandhata, an ancestor of Lord Rama, worshipped Shiva on this island. Shiva, pleased with his devotion, manifested as a Jyotirlinga. Additionally, the story of Mandhata’s sons, Ambarish and Muchukunda, who performed rigorous penance here, further adds to the temple’s significance.
- Devas vs. Danavas :
A great war between gods (Devas) and demons (Danavas) resulted in a victory for the demons. The Devas prayed to Shiva, who emerged as Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, defeating the Danavas and restoring the balance.
Philosophical Significance :
Omkareshwar is considered the conjunction of “Om” (the primordial sound) and “Akaar” (creation). This union signifies Advaita, the philosophy of non-duality where all is considered one. Om is regarded as the seed mantra of creation and is itself the creator of the universe.
Adi Shankara’s Cave :
Omkareshwar is also renowned as the place where Adi Shankara, the great philosopher and spiritual leader, met his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada in a cave. Today, this cave remains an important pilgrimage site, housing an image of Adi Shankara.

The temple is situated in Mandhata city, Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, approximately 16 km from Barwaha. Mandhata Island, enveloped by the sacred Narmada and Kaveri rivers, is accessible by boats and a bridge.
