Location and Architectural Grandeur :
The Kapilash Temple is perched at an elevation of approximately 2,239 feet above sea level, which adds an element of mystique and grandeur to its setting. The central tower of the temple stands tall at 60 feet, making it a prominent structure amidst the rolling hills.
To reach this temple, there are two approaches. The first is a spiritual journey involving the ascent of 1,352 steps, a path that many pilgrims undertake to express their devotion and seek blessings. The other approach is through Barabanki, a winding road that leads to the temple. The ancient craftsmanship and architectural precision of the temple draw the attention of art enthusiasts and architectural admirers.
The Kapilash Temple has a rich historical backdrop. It was King Narasinghdeva I of the Ganga Dynasty who initiated the construction of the temple, dedicated to Lord Chandrasekhar. The temple’s construction is recorded in the Kapilash temple inscription, which dates back to 1246 CE. This inscription not only chronicles the historical significance of the temple but also underscores its enduring spiritual and cultural importance.
Within the temple complex, two significant water bodies are located. To the left of the temple is the Payamrta Kunda, and to the right is the Marichi Kunda. These water bodies are not only a source of spiritual purification but also enhance the natural beauty of the temple premises.
The temple’s architecture is a testament to the skill of its builders. It features a wooden Jagamohana, which adds to the temple’s grandeur. Inside the temple, devotees can find the divine presences of Sri Ganesh, Kartikeya, and Gangadevi. One of the temple’s unique aspects is the presence of Patita pavana Jagannath, who is revered as the Parsa Deva.
In addition to the Chandrasekhar temple, the temple complex also houses the Lord Vishwanath Temple, which holds significance among devotees and researchers alike. According to some scholars, the Lord Vishwanath Temple, known as Budha Linga, predates the Chandrasekhar temple, adding layers of historical intrigue to this spiritual site.
Legends and Significance :
The Kapilash Temple is steeped in legends and sacred lore. Tradition maintains that this was once the hermitage of Kapila, the revered sage and the founder of the Samkhya school of philosophy. For some scholars, it is hailed as the second Kailash of Lord Shiva, alluding to its spiritual significance. It is believed that this temple exudes a tranquil aura that makes it a preferred destination for meditation and soul-searching.
During its long history, the temple has welcomed revered saints and scholars. Among them is Shridhar Swami, known for his commentary on the Bhagavata Purana, who resided within the temple complex. This association with revered spiritual figures has further added to the temple’s significance as a center for spiritual learning and reflection.
The Kapilash Temple is also home to several monasteries, creating an environment conducive to quiet contemplation and spiritual growth. Its tranquil surroundings and historical importance make it a preferred destination for pilgrims and tourists alike.
An Unfortunate Incident :
Despite its spiritual sanctity, the Kapilash Temple faced an unfortunate incident in November 2015 when three ancient idols were stolen from the temple premises. These statues, representing Lord Ganesh, Goddess Durga, and Goddess Bhairavi, were priceless treasures that held cultural and religious value. Their theft not only saddened devotees but also underscored the importance of protecting and preserving our historical and cultural heritage.
