The History and Mythology :

The origin of Ghuisarnath Temple is intricately woven into the fabric of Hindu mythology and devotion. According to the Shiva Purana, in a southern direction, on the banks of a serene lake, resided a pious Brahmin named Brahmavetta Sudharm, along with his wife, Sudeha. The couple’s profound sorrow stemmed from their inability to bear children, causing great distress to Sudeha.

In her quest for motherhood, Sudeha embarked on a spiritual journey, seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva. Despite her unwavering devotion and various rituals, she remained childless. In her despair, she took the unconventional step of marrying her sister, Ghushma, to her husband. Ghushma, under her sister’s guidance, crafted 101 Shivalingas and worshipped them. After their worship, she would submerge the Shivalingas in the nearby lake.

The divine blessings of Lord Shiva soon descended upon Ghushma, and she miraculously gave birth to a baby boy. However, the joy of motherhood led to her becoming prideful. This transformation in her character fueled jealousy in Sudeha. One fateful night, overcome by envy, Sudeha killed Ghushma’s son and discarded the lifeless body into the same lake where Ghushma had ritually submerged the Shivalingas.

The following morning, the daughter-in-law of Ghushma discovered the gruesome act and immediately informed her mother-in-law. Despite the horrifying sight of her son’s lifeless body, Ghushma remained resolute and continued her devotional rituals. Even her husband, Sudharma, remained undeterred. The unshaken Ghushma recited “Shiva-Shiva” in meditation and did not falter in her devotion.

The story took a divine turn when Ghushma proceeded to submerge the Shivalingas as part of her daily prayers. To her astonishment, she witnessed her deceased son miraculously returning to life. Lord Shiva, deeply moved by her unwavering faith, appeared before her and said, “I am pleased with your devotion.” Ghushma, filled with compassion, asked Lord Shiva to forgive her sister, Sudeha, and grant her salvation.

Pleased with her generous heart, Lord Shiva granted her another boon. Ghushma wished for Lord Shiva to reside eternally at this sacred place in the form of a Jyotirlinga, and that the temple be named after her. Granting her wish, Lord Shiva manifested as the Jyotirlinga Ghushmeshwar, and the lake came to be known as Sai.
